January 6th, 2009 at 01:59:08 thank you for your work translating the ezik v tumane cartoon! I think you did a great job. Your choice of words really does convey the meaning very well. For example, I like that you chose "what a weirdo" and not "psycho" which would have been a direct translation, but really sounds a lot more harsh in english...
January 6th, 2009 at 02:22:07 The English department showed this at an animation night we had at school, everybody loved it. ^^
January 6th, 2009 at 02:45:06 yes, perhaps you're right. translating somebody's work isn't as easy as it seems. It got me thinking about how to translate it right, LOL. Can't get my mind off it! I'm not sure about it being creepy, when i was little it used to make me feel melancholic rather than "creeped out" (not a word either). Thanks for your reply! :)
January 6th, 2009 at 03:08:05 "Sighed deeply" would sound like becoming frustrated. Nothing similar in the original. The author uses four words, to essentially keep to the style that the hedgehog stays amusingly phlegmatic all the way, indifferent to danger. Also in Russian "said quietly" would be shorter than "said without sound" - but it's the latter that is being narrated! Adding the uncanny, fantasizing how rich communication the animals possess.
January 6th, 2009 at 03:31:04 Of course, it's brilliant. Besides, it does creep children out, qed. It's an idiomatically incorrect translation, so it's not all fine. My attempt sounds clumsy because I'm not a professional translator, but I just tried to give the actual meaning. Do you prefer characters in movies speak random stuff as long as it's compact? :D Sorry, I didn't know "folklorised" was not a word :) I mean it has become folklore, in the sense that people quote the passages all over the place.
January 6th, 2009 at 03:54:03 it's not creepy, it's brilliant!!! how is it folklorised? there's nothing *russian* about it. Is folklorised a word? btw, the way it's translated, maybe not perfectly, but still, is FINE."sighed deeply" sounds more compact and not as clumsy as "he took as deep a breath as he could". "said someone quietly serves here better than "said without sound." the latter is too complex and confusing. Maybe "said someone silently"? THANK YOU SOYUZMULTFILM FOR SHARING IT WITH THE WORLD!
January 6th, 2009 at 04:17:02 This is my 1st time seeing this, I loved it! So dark & mysterious o.o
January 6th, 2009 at 04:40:01 yeah, very tragic. Americans arn´t allowed to speak like they know something about it though. becaus they don´t.
January 6th, 2009 at 05:03:00 more than 6,000,000 European Jews was killed in WW2, about a million Russian Jews was Killed or displaced between WW1 and WW2. How many like the genius Yuri Norstein where among them?
January 6th, 2009 at 05:25:59 nu eto je prosto klass
January 6th, 2009 at 05:48:58 Пробовали. Крышу снесло на фиг.
January 6th, 2009 at 06:11:57 I find the hedgehogs voice quite soothing for some reason.
January 6th, 2009 at 06:34:56 "я ежик, я упал в реку") "чай с можжевеловыми ветками"-крылатые фразы))обожаю советские мульты.этот один из любимых.
January 6th, 2009 at 06:57:55 Classic story from Russia with love. One of the best of mankind.
January 6th, 2009 at 07:20:54 Very good, is there more stuff like this out there?
January 6th, 2009 at 07:43:53 The definitive creepy cartoon of my childhood; totally folklorised nowadays too. "He sighed deeply" should be "he took as deep a breath as he could" "said someone quietly" -> "someone said without sound"
January 6th, 2009 at 08:06:52 smoke some grass before watching, please. Hahahaha.
January 6th, 2009 at 08:29:51 soooo cute <3
