Kumari - Living Goddess - Nepal

Posted in: Videos |

November 2007 To believers, Nepal's child goddesses or Kumaris can bestow luck with a glance. But when these children grow up, returning to normal life is virtually impossible. Girls selected as Kumaris must be aged between two and four and satisfy all the conditions of '32 perfections'. For a few short years, "all Nepalese people worship them" states one woman. But as soon as they experience their first menstruation, they lose their goddess status.

But trade in yarchagumba is funding the Maoist uprising. The best Yarchagumba comes from Dolpa - the poorest region of Nepal, where there are no roads, few jobs - an area dependent on aid. At harvest time, entire villages empty as inhabitants go in search of the herb. "Everybody wants to collect yarchagumba to earn money." But Maoists have taken over the trade and impose their own tax, staving the government of it's income. "We make a lot of money from the yarchagumba tax. It's the main source of income for our party", states Maoist spokesman Comrade Deepak.

October 2008 After ten years of conflict, Nepals feudal system has finally crumbled. As one of the most violent Maoist leaders is voted Prime Minister, we ask, can Nepals new republic find the peace it so desperately needs? The struggle cost the lives of 13,000 people and denied the country millions of tourist dollars. Headmasters were executed in schools and their children stolen for re-education. In the village of Beni, a shocking attack against government officials spilled into the streets.

Every year The Goldman Sachs Foundation and Asia Society recognize US high school students that demonstrate in-depth understanding of key issues in international affairs. Sarah from Westlake Village, CA is one of the 2008 winners of a $10,000 scholarship. She created a video comparing her life and those of her peers with people she met in Nepal, finding different definitions of necessity, wealth, and happiness. Sarahs video included footage she shot while in Nepal with a media team documenting human rights issues and the recent historic elections. While there, she filmed an interview with the rebel leader at the time, Prachanda, who has since become the Prime Minister of Nepal. Sarah has also completed video projects for her local symphony orchestra and continues to follow the evolving political situation in Nepal. Making Room to Read While trekking in Nepal in 1998, American John Wood saw that many children couldn't afford to go to school and that schools in the poorest rural areas had a chronic shortage of books. It was a transformational experience for Wood that spurred him to start a literacy program called Room to Read. This week's FRONTLINE/World Rough Cut tells the story of Wood's nonprofit that now helps to educate millions of children in the developing world and visits some of the Nepalese communities his program has helped. http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/rough/2007/06/nepal_a_girls_l.html

2008/7 Orlando Bloom visited UNICEF-supported projects providing clean water to children in Nepal. Every day, 5,000 children around the world die and many more become ill because of diseases spread by unclean water and poor sanitation.Around 13,000 children under the age of five in Nepal died last year due to diarrhoea.Children and their families have no choice but to drink contaminated water from local wells and rivers. During the trip,Orlando saw in some villages people do not have a problem getting clean drinking water now, UNICEF and its partners supply safe water to families but much more needs to be done. Orlando send message to all the people who can help - by donating to Unicef and helping to supply clean water, you would change not just one person's life, but the lives of a whole community, for years to come.

Journey to Hell & Back - Nepal

Posted in: Videos |

Nov 2001 With undercover filming, we follow this "road to hell", and the harsh life of prostitution these girls are forced to endure. In a dark backroom in Bombay's red light district, we meet the girls who are held here as prisoners. Forced to line up like animals in a market, they all look in their teens. Their eyes are empty. Most of the girls are too psychologically damaged to even think about escaping. "What could we do if we escape? The police won't help you. They're all corrupt," says one young girl, Kalpana. It all started on her way home from work at a carpet factory in Kathmandu, when a landslide caused the bus to stop. "I was really thirsty. Two men said, 'Drink from this bottle.' After drinking a few sips, I blacked out." When she woke up, she was in a brothel in Bombay. Kalpana is only one of over 100,000 prostitutes here, many of them child prostitutes. There are several aid organisations working to expose child prostitution; Rescue Foundation is one of these, and has a number of informers working undercover in Bombay. We see a raid on a brothel suspected of housing under-age girls. 14 young girls emerge from a room with a hidden ceiling -- six or seven of them are Nepalese. The growing sex industry in India clearly provides the incentive for trafficking. But some think the problem stems from cultural traditions: "Women's personality is always defined in terms of sex and marital status," says lawyer Yubaraj Sangroula. And this is a much harder problem to tackle.
