Executions in Qom: Amnesty comments (IranVNC.com)

Three more Iranian men were put to death on August 7th in the central city of Qom. As reported in the conservative newspaper Kayhan, one of the men was convicted of having "illegitimate relationships," one for murder and the third man was convicted for the possession and sale of opium. According to human rights organization, Amnesty International, the executions in Qom bring the number of people hanged so far this year to 190. Amnesty described the Islamic Republic of being a "prolific user" of the death penalty. Iran researcher at Amnesty, Drewery Dyke told IranVNC: Soundbite (Dyke): "The failure to provide more details regarding either due process or the identity, and if not the identity, at least the nature of the process followed does raise some concerns, when one is confronted by such large numbers." Amnesty says Iran executed 317 people last year -- 2nd only to China in the number of executions; a country with a population nearly 20 times greater than Iran's. The organization also pointed to a December 2007 United Nations General Assembly resolution that calls on member nations to "establish a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty." Soundbite (Dyke): "There is obviously a worldwide trend away from using the death penalty for the non-lethal, or so-called victimless crimes." Iran has also received widespread criticism from international rights groups and bodies for its continued execution of juvenile offenders. In June, the European Union called on Iran to abolish executions against minors, which is prohibited by the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Iran is signatory to both treaties. The rights groups also have urged Iran to repeal the punishment of death by stoning. On August 5th, Iran's Judiciary announced that it would place a moratorium on this practice. But Amnesty International appears skeptical, pointing out that Iran stoned to death a man identified as Jafar Kiani in July 2007, despite a 2002 Judiciary ordered moratorium on the punishment. Soundbite (Dyke): "I think it's fair to say, it remains to be seen one, that this pledge will be honored. As you may be aware, the new draft for the penal code is under consideration by parliament." "The provisions for stoning may have been removed in that draft, which by the way, has also been through the Law and Legal Affairs Committee, so it's interesting to see what they do with that." Ayatollah Meshkini funeral at Qom

Ayatollah Meshkini laid to rest in Qom 12:05:49 È.Ù The body of the late head of the Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Ali Meshkini, was laid to rest at the mausoleum of Hazrat Masoomeh (SA), Sister of Imam Reza (AS) the eighth Imam of Shia Muslims, in the holy city of Qom on Thursday. Ayatollah Meshkini passed away on July 30 at the age of 86 in Tehran where he was hospitalized for some time due to pulmonic disease. In addition of being the chairman of the Assembly of Experts, he was also Friday prayers leader of Qom, located some 160 KM south of the capital Tehran. A massive funeral procession was held for Ayatollah Meshkini in Tehran on Wednesday with the participation of senior Iranian officials and people of various walks of life. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel as well as senior military and administrative authorities and cabinet ministers took part in the ceremony.

Tour of the Mar'ashi Library, Qom, Iran

Fellowship of Reconciliation delegates from the U.S. toured the Mar'ashi Library in Iran's religious center, Qom, guided by Dr. Awsati, curator. He shows many of the rare handwritten books and manuscripts that the library is famous for, and the book restoration facility. Delegates conversed with the son of the library's founder, Dr. Mahmood Mar'ashi. The tour was filmed in Iran in March, 2007. The life and sacrifices of the library founder is described as well as his dedication to the collection. Handwritten and rare manuscripts that range in age from 1300 years old to the present day are shown.
