After putting together a lot for this one video, i tell ya it was worth it. Although some of the audio might be off from the video, i had to speed up the audio to be the same speed of the video. Mind you, the music you're hearing is NOT the studio version, but the actual "live" prerecording they played to. Enjoy!

Classical Gas Video Smothers Brothers 1968
Posted in: Videos | January 7th, 2009

The "Classical Gas Video," as it has come to be known, started out as a student film created by Dan McLaughlin with Beethoven's 5th Symphony as the original soundtrack. His concept was to take the world's greatest art and team it with the world's greatest music to create, what else, the world's great film. He came damn close. After seeing the film in early 1968, Mason Williams, writer for the Smothers Brothers and composer of Classical Gas, approached McLaughlin about replacing the music with his composition, a successful Top 40 record at the time. The revamped music video was shown on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, first during the summer of 1968 and several times more throughout the year. The video has since passed into legend (some call it one of the very first music videos), while Classical Gas, due in part to the impact of the video, became one of the largest selling instrumental recordings of all time. After years of waiting for the video to be released, I finally assigned myself the task of re-creating it. Give or take a few frames, it is nearly identical to the actual video that aired on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour 40 years ago. All comments welcomed. Enjoy!
