The Mystery Of Bulgarian Voices - The project Voyager part 8
Posted in: Videos | January 8th, 2009

This song is recorded on golden CDs and is on the spacecrafts Voyager 1 and 2 as a message of the human nation to other civilizations. The song is from the Rhodope region The Voyager Golden Record is a phonograph record included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find it. The Voyager spacecraft will take about 40,000 years to come near another star, 'near' meaning in this case within around 1.7 light-years' distance; hence, if other beings do not come in the direction of the spacecraft to meet them, it will take at least that long for the Golden Record to be found. As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, it is extraordinarily unlikely that they will ever be intercepted. If they are ever found by an alien species, it will be far in the future, and thus the record is best seen as a symbolic statement rather than a serious attempt to communicate with aliens. The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University. Dr. Sagan and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind, and thunder, and animal sounds, including the songs of birds and whales. To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, and spoken greetings from Earthlings in fifty-five languages, and printed messages from President Jimmy Carter and U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. After NASA had received criticism over the nudity on the Pioneer plaque (line drawings of a naked man and woman), the agency chose not to allow Sagan and his colleagues to include a photograph of a nude man and a nude, pregnant woman on the record. Instead, only a silhouette of the couple was included[1]. Here is an excerpt of President Carter's official statement placed on the Voyager spacecraft for its trip outside our solar system, June 16, 1977: We cast this message into the cosmos... Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, some — perhaps many — may have inhabited planets and space faring civilizations. If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message: We are trying to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope some day, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of Galactic Civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination and our goodwill in a vast and awesome universe. The 115 images are encoded in analog form. The remainder of the record is audio, designed to be played at 16⅔ revolutions per minute. It contains spoken greetings beginning with Akkadian, which was spoken in Sumer about six thousand years ago, and ending with Wu, a modern Chinese dialect. Following the section on the sounds of Earth, there is an eclectic 90-minute selection of music from many cultures, including Eastern and Western classics. The selections include:Bulgaria "Излел е Делю хайдутин" ("Izlel je Delyo Hajdutin") traditional Valya Balkanska Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, Rome, Turkey,Serbia, Thracians, Byzantium

The Mystery Of Bulgarian Voices & Music - "DRYMBOY" 23

Elitsa & Stoyan - Water (Bulgaria - 5th on Eurovision 2007) Elitsa Todorova was born on 02 Sept. 1977. She studied at the "Philip Koutev" school of musicin Kotel, specializing in folklore singing; and the "Dobri Hristov" school of music in Varna, specializing in percussions. She then graduated from the "P. Vladigerov" State Academy of music in Sofia, majoring in percussions. She attracts both, the audiences' and the critics' attention by her specific voice - strong, deep-toned, clear and hardy, the tone-quality being one of beautiful and rich ornamentation. Todorova worked as a soloist at the State Dance and Music Ensemble in Varna and the "Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria" Choir where she performed authentic Bulgarian folk songs, and compositions in Yiddish and Sanskrit. In 2003 Elitsa Todorova began working with Bulgaria's most popular and renowned drummer and percussionist Stoyan Yankoulov. The unique Elitsa Todorova-Stoyan Yankoulov Duo turned into a phenomenon in no time. Their high professionalism and perfectionism underlies all their performances. Elitsa Todorova develops a percussions-playing style of her own, combining quick ostinate rhythms on the tarambuka with synhronized tarambuka with synchronized playing and singing. The result is a mosaic of unique vocal movements and impeccable musical improvisations. She plays traditional percussion instruments in a most non-traditional way. The singer easily mixes traditional folklore with jazz, drum and base, ethno-motifs, classics and spontaneous improvisation. The result is fascinating. A magnetic voice and percussion tell us their folklore-jazz story. In her repertoire Elitsa Todorova plays instruments like the tarambuka, drums, maracas, clavess, old silver coins, shepperd'schimes, horses' bells,a magical thunder-wand, guirro, chimes, but of all musical instruments the best, in her opinion, is human voice. Through combining authentic Bulgarian folk songs with the energy of percussions Elitsa Todorova presents in a most touchng way the core, the potency and the emotional power of Bulgarian culture. She has been working with: "The Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria"Choir, "Varna Ensemble", "The Mystery of the Bulgarian voices" and the musicians: Stoyan Yankoulov, Theodosii Spassov, Ivo Pappazov, Antonii Donchev, Jivko Petrov, Vesselin Vesselinov, Rossen Zahariev, Michail Yossifov, Vasko Vassilev, Arabel Fon Karajan, Anatoly Vapirov, Roushi Vidinliev, Rui Junior, Pamela Nicolson, Okhai Temiz, Yamar Tiyam, Nikos Тouliatos, William Pluma, Habib Shamandy, Ivan Shopov DJ Cooh, Hristo Yotzov the Bulgarian National Radio orchestra, Classic FM Radio orchestra and many others. She has taken part in concerts in Canada, Finland, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Hungary, Switzerland, Croatia, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Ukraine and in Africa. Elitsa Todorova has presented Bulgarian cultural heritage before the presidents of Bulgaria, Greece, Armenia, Hungary; before H.M. Prince Albert, Koidjiro Matsura of UNESCO, PACE ministers. She took part in 2005 most significant cultural event-the launching of cultural corridors for South-East Europe. Elitsa Todorova has been given the following awards: The Golden Phenomenon statuette for 2005, for her phenomenal achievements in the field of the singing and performing arts and for promoting Bulgarian culture around the world; A Honorary Diploma from the Republic of Austria's Embassy for her great contribution to popularizing Bulgarian Jazz music to Austria within the Step across the border 2005 European Program. Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work, or music or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense: According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own to use (another's production) without crediting the source to commit literary theft to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source. The Mystery Of Bulgarian Voices - Prituri se Planinata & "Time of Violence "
Posted in: Videos | January 8th, 2009

Stefka Sabotinova was born in Thrace, Bulgaria's large southern plain. Her native village Rozov Kladenets (Rose Well) is no longer there -- it lies at the bottom of a huge dam. The signer however, often revisits the sweet memories of its beautiful nature. She calls that lost place, a Paradise, surviving today in folk songs only. Most of her songs Stefka learned from her grandmother. Her granny had in fact borrowed some of them from a once famous local singer who had migrated to Bulgaria from Greece. With this priceless musical capital Stefka Sabotinova ran for a place in the prestigious state folk song and dance ensemble Fillip Koutev. Back in 1954 when she was just 21, her original song selection and magnificent voice did impress the selection panel. She was immediately selected, and composer Fillip Koutev arranged some of the songs she brought. They are still part of the ensemble's programs though its one-time soloist. http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/Winners/Results.aspx?title=&winner=Marcel+Cellier&year=0&genreID=0&hp=1 Upon leaving Fillip Koutev ensemble, she continued her career in the Bulgarian National Radio folk ensemble. Her voice is part of the magic in the Mystery of Bulgarian Voices. "In my life, happy moments came somewhat late", Stefka Sabotinova says. When her voice was in its prime, and she herself -- charged with creative enthusiasm, Stefka was well known but only to a limited circle of professionals. Her world fame took her by surprise and came at a much later stage. A dozen years ago the lovely Thracian song The Mountain Went Dark was on the market in a contemporary version, but with her lovely voice. The video of the song became quite popular and was aired in Europe. She woke to a new, and unexpected popularity. Over the recent years, Stefka Sabotinova has been starring in most major concerts. She has devoted time and resources to some of the country's orphanages. The funds raised Sabotinova has donated to Raina Kabaivanska Foundation for the support of talented underprivileged children. As to her private life, her greatest joy is her grandson Mitko. And she has an extraordinary hobby -- the lady with the fine voice is very keen on hunting. A Janissary who was kidnapped from the village as a boy is sent to force the reluctant inhabitants to convert. The Turkish governor seeks a peaceful solution, but ultimately torture, violence, and rebellion break out. Written by Peter Reiher 1668. The jihad is in its heat in the Southeastern Europe. A corps of janissaries is commissioned to the Rhodope Mountains under the command of Karaibrahim. At the time, he was, as all the janissaries were, kidnapped from his Bulgarian family, raised as a Muslim, trained to be a ferocious warrior and convert infidels to Islam in a most brutal way. His cruelty stuns even local Ottoman ruler. He stops at nothing but the resistance of some of the locals is invincible. The struggle is half a success, there are many converts, the death toll is heavy, but all the Bulgarian keep their language and traditions on. Written by Georgi Djulgerov

Album; Isihia; song-Vetre Isihia is the musical answer to the questions "Who are we?", "Where do we come from?", "What cultural and historical traditions do we have?". Isihia is the sound tangle of pure folklore motifs of the Bulgarian song and melody, the Hesychast sound of the Christian singing, the mystery of the Balkan spirit and the romance of national drama in Bulgarian history. Isihia is the musical tale of the times of the most genuine belief in the history of the Bulgarian spiritual life -- Hesychasm. Isihia is the musical glance back to the history of the Bulgarians. The very end of the 20-th century was a time of severe trial for the Bulgarian people and the Balkan peoples as a whole, whose belonging to the European Christian civilization both in geographical and cultural, as well as in historical aspect is certainly doubtless. Most threatening to the Bulgarian nation today are not the political failures, the economic instability, not even the demographic collapse, but the weakness and impersonality of spirit. In such times, each nation turns to the stronghold of its traditions and history where its hidden strength lies. It is to reach the roots of that strength and to draw invigorating spirit from the shell of the Bulgarian identity that Isihia was born for, Isihia -- the bridge from the past to the present. The ancient spirit of the Bulgarian land, whose roots have been marked by the cultures of Thraceans, Romans, Slavs, Proto-Bulgarians, Byzantines and Ottoman Turks -- a spirit combining the pagan and Christian traditions is the strength giving inspiration and creating the musical aesthetics of Isihia. The name "Isihia" epitomizes the search for the conceptual link making a reference to the Hesychast religious movement that occurred in the last years of the Byzantine existence and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The Hesychasts of those times believed that everything mortal was doomed to death but what had to be saved and what had to survive were the spirit and the Orthodox faith. On the eve of the Ottoman occupation of the Balkan Peninsula, the Hesychast movement of the 14th century returned to the pure faith of the first Christians as a reaction to safeguard the Balkan Orthodox identity. In the very beginning of the 21st century, Isihia is going back to the Middle-Age Hesychast concept bearing the initial Christian ideas, which are so necessary today with their true faith, intact morale and genuine dedication of spirit. To the Middle-Age Christian person the word "Isihia" referred to the essence of Hesychast ideas and its literal meaning was silence, contemplation, peace -- the spiritual practice to accomplish the mystic union with God. It is most recognized under the recording name Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. First created in Bulgaria in 1952 by Philip Koutev, "the father of Bulgarian concert folk music," the choir is now under the direction of Dora Hristova. Koutev also created and conducted the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic in 1951. Singers are chosen from country villages for the beauty and openness of their voices, and they undergo extensive training in the unique centuries' old singing style. Influenced by Bulgaria's Thracian, Ottoman and Byzantine history, their music is striking in its use of diaphonic singing and distinctive timbre, as well as its modal scales and dissonant harmonies (abundant second, seventh, and ninth intervals). Though the choir became widely known when the trend-setting English alternative record label 4AD released a pair of anthology albums in 1986 and 1988 with the now famous title Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, their recordings date as far back as 1957. The first pressing of the Voix Bulgares album was the result of fifteen years of work by Swiss ethnomusicologist and producer Marcel Cellier and was originally released in 1975 on his small Discs Cellier label. Ivo Watts-Russell (founder of 4AD) was introduced to the choir from a third or fourth generation audio cassette lent to him by Peter Murphy, singer from the band Bauhaus. He became thoroughly entranced by the music, and tracked down and licensed the recordings from Cellier. The group has since performed extensively around the world to wide acclaim and were honored with a Grammy Award in 1989 for their second album. Three prominent soloists of the group have also performed together as the Trio Bulgarka, notably on the Kate Bush albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. In 1992, the choir divided into two: one for radio, one for television. Bulgarian television signed a contract with the one half, which is the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir; the other half organised itself as a collective, and now performs as The Bulgarian Voices ANGELITE Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, Rome, Turkey,Serbia, Thracians, Byzantium
